Sister M. Fanchon Mahady, IHM

Sister M. Fanchon Mahady, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Monday, September 9, 1991 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on September 15, 1918 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and given the name Florence.  She was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Coleman Mahady.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, received the religious habit on May 8, 1939, and made profession of her vows on May 8, 1941.

Sister Fanchon served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Michael's Elementary School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA; St. Basil Elementary School in Dushore, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary Schoolin Asbury Park, NJ; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; as well as at schools located in LaPlata, MD.

For several years, Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at local parishes.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, and a Master of Science degree in guidance, both from Marywood College.

Shewas preceded in death by three brothers, Gerard, Francis, and John.

She is survived by two sisters,  Mary Schuster of Carbondale, PA, and Rita Noel of Lake Peekskill, NY, a brother, Cyril J. of Kingstown, RI, nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Thursday, September 12 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Rose Church in Carbondale, with interment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at St. Joseph's Hospital Convent, 92 Lincoln Avenue, Carbondale, on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
