Sister Marie Rose O'Malley, IHM

Sister Marie Rose O'Malley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, February 7, 1958 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

She was born on May 31, 1905 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Josephine.  She was the daughter of the late John J. and Mary Agnes O'Hora O'Malley. She entered the IHM Congregation on January 1, 1923, received the religious habit on August 15, 1923, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1925.

Sister Marie Rose served as teacher at the following schools: St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1915 to 1926; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1926 to 1930; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA, from 1930 to 1933; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA, from 1933 to 1934 and 1937 to 1938; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1938 to 1939; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA, from 1941 to 1948; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA, from 1948 to 1951; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York, NY, from 1951 to 1953; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY, from 1953 to 1956; and St. Johnthe Evnagelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1956 to 1957.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ann's Catechetical Center in Devon, CT, from 1939 to 1940, and Our Lady of Good Counsel Catechetical Center in Inwood, NY, from 1940 to 1941. 

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred, and four brothers, Joseph, Cyril Joseph, John, and Francis P.

She is survived by four sisters, Sister M. Cyrillus, IHM, Mary Devine, Dorothy Brust, and Katherine, and a brother, Daniel. 

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister Marie Rose O'Malleywas engaged in teaching almost to the end of her life. On Wednesday, she went to our hospital to receive care for a respiratory cold; on Thursday, she was anointed as a precautionary measure; on Friday evening, she became unconscious and in a few hours, she died. May God grant her the eternal rest that she so frequently prayed for others.
