Sister M. Anna Murphy, IHM

Sister M. Anna Murphy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, January 21, 1967 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on August 22, 1893 in Laddsburg, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary Geraldine. She was the daughter of the late Stephen S. and Mary Elizabeth McMahon Murphy, She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1910, received the religious habit on August 2, 1911, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1913.

Sister Anna was an accomplished musician, and served as a music teacher at the following schools: All Saints School in Masontown, PA, from 1913 to 1914; IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID, from 1914 to 1918; St. Lawrence Academy in Portland, OR, from 1918 to 1919; St. Alphonsus School in New York City, from 1919 to 1920 and 1940 to 1941; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA, from 1920 to 1921 and 1927 to 1928; St. Michael's School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1921 to 1923 and 1946 to 1947; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA, from 1923 to 1924; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA, from 1924 to 1926, 1937 to 1938 and 1944 to 1946; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1926 to 1927; St. Joseph School in New Bern, NC, in 1927; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA, in 1928; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA, in 1929; St. Rose School in Carbondale, PA, from 1929 to 1930; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1930 to 1931; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY, from 1931 to 1932 and 1949 to 1950; St. Mary School in Manhasset, NY, from 1932 to 1933; Holy Rosary School in Scranton, PA, from 1933 to 1935; St. Joseph School in Williamsport, PA, from 1935 to 1936; St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA, from 1936 to 1937 and 1955 to 1966; Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary School in New York, NY, from 1938 to 1939; Epiphany School in Sayre, PA, from 1941 to 1943; St. Dominic School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1943 to 1944; St. Agnes School in Baltimore, MD, from 1947 to 1949; St. Mary-John School in Cresson, PA, from 1950 to 1951; and Immaculate Conception School in Lock Haven, PA, from 1954 to 1955.

Sister also served as a catechetical and music instructor at St. Ann Catechetical Center in Devon, CT, from 1939 to 1940; and Holy Name of Mary Catechetical Center in Montrose, PA, from 1954 to 1955.

From 1966 until the time of her death, Sister Anna served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Francis James and Leonard Joseph.

She is survived by a sister, Anna Joan Finan, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
