Sister M. Hostia Lowe, IHM

Sister M. Hostia Lowe, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, February 11, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 9, 1910 in Providence, Rhode Island, and given the name Caroline. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin A. and Caroline M. Parent Lowe. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 5, 1932, made temporary profession of her vows on April 30, 1935, and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1938.

Sister Hosita served as a music teacher at the following schools: St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1939 to 1948 and 1970 to 1975; South Scranton Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1956; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1956 to 1957; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA, from 1957 to 1960; St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1960 to 1961; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1961 to 1962; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1962 to 1969; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1969 to 1970; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; and Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Patrick School in Oneida, NY; as well as at schools located in Goldsboro, NC.

Sister also served as a private music teacher at Nativity Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1975 to 1989.

From 1989 until the time of her death, Sister Hosita served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano and violin, and a Bachelor of Science degree in education and theology, both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor, and a brother, Ernest.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Helen Lowe of Providence, RI, and nephews, Stephen R. Lowe of West Warwick, RI, and Joseph E. Lowe of Boxboro, MA. 

The funeral will be Friday, February 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday after 2:00 p.m.
