Sister M. Rosita Hopkins, IHM

Sister M. Rosita Hopkins, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Wednesday, March 5, 1969 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on May 10, 1908 in Avoca, Pennsylvania, and given the name Claire Rita. She was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Moylan Hopkins. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1924, received the religious habit on August 15, 1924, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1925.

Sister Rosita served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Justin Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1926 to 1929; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1929 to 1934 and 1953 to 1957; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary Schoolin Altoona, PA, from 1934 to 1935; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1935 to 1939; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1939 to 1947 and 1957 to 1959; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1943 to 1947; and Chapel (Elementary) School in Scranton, PA, from 1959 to 1960.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ignatius Catechetical Center in Kingston, PA, from 1948 to 1953, and St. Ann Catechetical Center in Devon, CT, from 1947 to 1949.  

From 1960 until the time of her death, Sister Rosita served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, John, Francis and James, and a sister, Rose.

She is survived by three sisters, Blanche Studders, Grace Morgan and Ruth Pullis, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
