Sister M. Stella Devers, IHM

Sister M. Stella Devers, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday, June 12, 1984 at St. Joseph Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on October 24, 1915 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late James and Stella Leonard Devers. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1933, received the religious habit on April 24, 1934, and made profession of her vows on April 30, 1936.

Sister Stella served as a teacher in intermediate and upper grade level, as well as music teacher at the following schools: Holy Trinity School in Poughkeepsie, NY; St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark's Green, PA; and at schools located in Brooklyn, NY. 

Sister served as principal at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Forest Hills, New York.  She served as local superior in several of her missions.

Sister Stella served on the support staff of Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1979 to 1983.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Stella served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by aunts and uncles, including Sister M. Aluigi Devers, IHM, and Reverend John Aloysius Devers, C.S.C.

She is survived by a brother, Joseph J. of Scranton, PA, a sister, Mrs. Alice Prisco of Eugene, Oregon, and several nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Friday, June 15 with Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent chapel at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania Friends may call at the Marian Convent Thursday afternoon or evening.
