Sister M. Eleanora Whalen, IHM

Sister M. Eleanora Whalen, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Thursday, March 21, 1991, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on October 24, 1906 in New York City, NY, and was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary Maloney Whalen. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1923, received the religious habit on December 27, 1923, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1925.

Sister Eleanora served as a music teacher at the following schools: Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark's Green, PA; as well as schools located in New York, Maryland, and North Carolina.  Sister's most recent assignment was at Wyoming Area Catholic School in Exeter, PA

For a period of approximately ten years, Sister Eleanora served the IHM Congregation as an education consultant in music.

Sister Eleanora earned her Bachelor of Music degree, and Master of Arts degree in music education, both from Marywood College. She did further study in theology and music at Fordham University, New York University and at Villanova University. She also studied for a year at Pius XII Institute in Florence, Italy, on a scholarship awarded by the Archdiocese of New York.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Nicholas, Edmond, and Thomas; and two sisters, Anna and a sister who died in infancy.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Saturday, March 23 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday afternoon after 2:00 p.m.
