Sister M. Madelena Gilroy, IHM

Sister M. Madelena Gilroy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, April 25, 1971 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 18, 1878 in Pittston, and given the name Mary.  She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Ann Gilroy.  She entered the IHM Congregation on July 2, 1903, received the religious habit on December 31, 1903, and made profession of her vows on December 28, 1905.

Sister Madelena served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; All Saints Elementary School in Masontown, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York City; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA.

Sister served as principal at St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY, from 1930 to 1933, and St. Rita Elementary School in Dundalk, MD, from 1933 to 1934.

She was preceded in death by three  sisters, Sister M. Ethelbert, IHM, Margaret Gill, and Elizabeth, and two brothers, Reverend Leo and Martin.

She is survived by a brother, William of Pittston, PA, nieces and nephews, including our Sister M. Marita Gill, IHM.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
