Sister M. Bernardina McAndrew, IHM
Sister M. Bernardina McAndrew, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 8, 1996 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on September 2, 1909 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Regina. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Ellen (Mame) Manley McAndrew. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1927, made temporary profession of her vows on December 27, 1929, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1933.
Sister Bernardina served as a teacher at Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA.
Sister also served as a psychology professor and the Director of the Psychoeducational Clinic at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1973 to 1947. She also served as a psychologist at St. Joseph's Center in Scranton, PA, from 1974 to 1980, and continued on in private practice until 1984.
From 1984 until the time of her death, Sister Bernardina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
Sister Bernardina also served on the Executive Council of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and as a member of the following: Eastern Psychological Association, American Psychological Association and the American Board of Professional Examiners in Clinical Psychology.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in language, and Master of Arts degree in Latin, both from Marywood College, and a Doctorate in Psychology from Catholic University in Washington, DC.
She is preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Murdock and Adelaide McAndrew, and two brothers, Francis and Joseph.
She is survived by two nieces, Regina Marie Murdock of Throop, PA, Mary Grace Sloan of Kensington, MD, and two nephews, John Murdock of Pittsburgh, PA, and Thomas Murdock of Pinehurst, CA.
Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

A woman of brilliance and simplicity, Sr. Bernardina lived with boundless energy as a psychologist and educator. Her integrity and scholarship had a strong impact on the lives of many in northeastern Pennsylvania and contributed substantially to the shaping of the IHM Congregation. Remembered for her humor, love of children and respect for tradition while remaining ever-open to new light, she shared her professional ability and caring heart with thousands of students and clients.
