Sister Catherine Mary Manley, IHM
Sister Catherine Mary Manley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, January 19, 1996 in Baltimore, Maryland.
She was born on July 25, 1935 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Joanne. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Catherine Marion Manley, and the step-daughter of the late John P. Collins. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1953, made temporary profession of her vows on August 4, 1956, and final profession of her vows on August 4, 1959.
Sister Catherine Mary served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Goldsboro, NC; St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Felicitas Elementary School in Chicago, IL; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD; Archbishop Neale High School in LaPlata, MD; Bishop O'Reilly High School in Kingston, PA; and Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC. She served as a English teacher at Bethlehem University in Israel, from 1992 to 1995.
Sister Catherine Mary served as a pastoral minister in the following: Our Lady of Mercy in Washington Parish, NC; St. John the Evangelist Parish in Silver Spring, MD; Nativity Parish in Washington, DC; St. Bernardine of Siena Parish in Suitland, MD; St. Mary's Parish in Fredericksburg, VA; and St. John Bosco Parish in Woodstock, MD.
Sister Catherine Mary also served as the Coordinator of Hospitality and Travel of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, DC; and Director of the Theresa Maxis Center for Justice and Peace for the IHM Congregation in Scranton, PA.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education, and a Master of Arts degree in English, both from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death by a step-brother, Edward Collins.
She is survived by sister, Jean Westbrook of Darnestown, MD; a step-sister, Betty Doyle of Scranton, PA; three step-brothers, John Collins of Philadelphia, PA, Roland Collins of Glenolden, PA, and Paul Collins of Spokane, WA; and cousins Sister Marie Immaculée Sardegna, IHM of Binghamton, NY, Sister M. Agnella Murtaugh, IHM and Sister M. Austin Murdock, IHM, both of the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.
Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.

A pilgrim in the fullest sense of the word, Sister Catherine Mary entered into eternal life on January 19, 1996. With openness to new experience and the searching soul of a Celtic wanderer, Sr. Catherine Mary shared her joyful, vibrant presence with hundreds of people in several countries. As an educator, pastoral minister and tour guide, she became a strong advocate for women and social justice.
