Sister M. Dominica Gurrell, IHM

Sister M. Dominica Gurrell, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Wednesday, January 22, 1992 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on September 2, 1906 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Alice. She was daughter of the late James and Catherine Cawley Gurrell. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1922, received the religious habit on December 28, 1922, and made profession of her vows on December 29, 1924.

Sister Dominica served as a junior high school teacher at the following local schools: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA; and Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre, PA. She also served at IHM schools located in Pittsburgh and Altoona, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Dominica served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by three sisters, Isabel, Catherine and Marie.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Swift and Dorothy Walsh, both of Scranton, PA, and nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Saturday, January 25 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, PA.  Friends may call on Friday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
