Sister M. Christella Duggan, IHM

Sister M. Christella Duggan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, May 4, 2002 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on December 25, 1931 in New York City, NY, she was given the name Christine Theresa. She was the daughter of the late Daniel M. and Catherine V. Duggan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 7, 1949, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1952, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1955.

Sister Christella served as a teacher in the following schools: South Scranton Catholic High School in Scranton, PA; Laurel Hill Academy in Susquehanna, PA; St. Paul High School in Cranston, RI; St. Raymond High School in East Rockaway, NY; Maria Regina High School in Uniondale, NY; and in  Forest Hills, NY. She served as principal at Archbishop Neale School in La Plata, MD.

Sister Christella served as an English teacher on the faculty at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1978 to 1991; and at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights, NY, from 1992 to 1994 and 1998 to 1999.

Sister also served as an education consultant for the IHM Congregation, from 1972 to 1974; prayer minister at St. Gabriel's Passionist Monastery in Clarks Summit, from 1975 to 1976; researcher/writer for the Brooklyn Diocesan Prayer Channel; and member of the support staff at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, from 1999 to 2001. 

From 2001 to the time of her death, Sister Christella served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

Sister Christella was a writer and poet, and her works were published in numerous journals including America and Sisters Today.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Marywood College, a Master of Arts degree in English from St. John University in Jamaica, NY, and a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Marywood College.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary M. Duggan of Brooklyn, NY, and Eileen Beasley of Port St. Lucie, FL, a brother, John of Yorktown Heights, NY, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Thursday after 2:00 p.m.
