Sister M. Denis Donegan, IHM

Sister M. Denis Donegan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, February 14, 1974 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on June 4, 1896 in Brooklyn, New York, and given the name Elizabeth (Bessie).  She was the daugther of the late Denis Peter and Bridget (Bride) Whalen Donegan. She entered the IHM Congregation on October 14, 1928, received the religious habit on April 1, 1929, and made profession of her vows on April 14, 1931.

Sister Denis served as a teacher at St. Rosalia School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1931 to 1933 and 1934 to 1936; and at St. Joseph School in Williamsport, from 1934 to 1935.  

At Marywood College in Scranton, PA, Sister served on the faculty teaching library science, English, and literature, from 1936 to 1970. 

From 1970 until the time of her death, Sister Denis served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Mary (Mollie) Donegan and Katherine Rutt, and a brother, Denis James.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
