Sister M. Virgine Maurer, IHM

Sister M. Virgine Maurer, IHM, of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, November 28, 1991, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on February 24, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Helen. She was the daughter of the late Joseph N. and Helen R. Tennyson Maurer. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934, received the religious habit on April 30, 1935 and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1937.

Sister Virgine served as a music teacher, as well as a kindergarten and intermediate grades teacher at the following schools: St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Silver Spring, MD; and Little Flower Elementary School in Bethesda, MD; as well as at elementary schools located in Manhasset, NY, and Baltimore, MD.

Sister also served as a principal at elementary schools located in Lock Haven, PA, and at Sacred Heart in Mount Holly, NJ.

From the fall of 1991 until the time of her death, Sister Virgine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Detroit.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Louis, and a sister, Margaret Knauer.

She is survived by two brothers, Kenneth J. of Baltimore, MD, and Wilfred T. of Bloomsburg, PA, and a sister, Kathryn E. Maurer of Baltimore, MD, nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Monday, December 2 with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Friends may call Sunday afternoon or evening at the Marian Convent.
