Sister M. Elsabet Carden, IHM

Sister M. Elsabet Carden, IHM of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 3, 2000 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on June 27, 1909 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and given the name Florence E.  She was the daughter of the late Frank D. and Elizabeth Lee Carden. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934, made temporary profession of her vows on May 3, 1937 and final profession of her vows on August 1, 1940.

Sister Elsabet served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Michael's School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1944 to 1947 and 1958 to 1964; St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1951 to 1955; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1964 to 1965; Sacred Heart of Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, from 1965 to 1967; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1967 to 1969; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1975 to 1989; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Asbury Park, NJ; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; as well at elementary schools located in Cresson and Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Patrick's Catechetical Center in Milford, PA, from 1969 to 1975.

From 1989 until the time of her death, Sister Elsabet served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three  sisters, Stellena (Stella), Gladys, Leona Parker, and six brothers, James, Frank, William, Leonard, Lee and Harold.

She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Ryder, Cooperstown, NY, a cousin, Elizabeth Cost, Carbondale, PA, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, December 7 at 10:30 a.m.with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
