Sister M. Alberta Lovett, IHM

Sister M. Alberta Lovett, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, August 11, 2000 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on January 17, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Dorothy V. She was the daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Jane McAleese Lovett. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, made her temporary profession of vows on August 2, 1941, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1944.

Sister Alberta served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to 1972; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from  1974 to 1976; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1982 to 1984; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1984 to 1986; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Ann Elementary School in Nyack, NY; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; as well as schools located in Manhasset and Brooklyn, NY, Mount Holly, NJ, and Baltimore, MD.

From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Alberta served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in elementary education from New York University.  As a member of the National Catholic Educational Association and the International Reading Association, Sister Alberta received an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America Award in 1974.

She was preceded in death by six sisters, Sarah (Sally) Maher, Marie Frank, Marian Lovett, Elizabeth Smith, Madeline Lafavre and Regina DeFuccio, and a brother, Eugene.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Richard DeFuccio of Brooklyn, NY.

The funeral will be Monday, August 14 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Sunday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
