Sister Maria Thomas Harrington, IHM

Sister Maria Thomas Harrington, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Monday, October 10, 1983 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on May 8, 1909 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Connell Harrington.  She entered the IHM Congregation on August 15, 1926, received the religious habit on December 29, 1926, and made profession of her vows on January 2, 1929.

Sister Maria Thomas served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY; and St. Clare Elementary School in Scranton, PA.

Sister served as principal at the following schools: St. Raymond Elementary School in East Rockaway, NY; Epiphany Elementary School in Sayre; as well as at schools located in Forest Hills, NY, Kingston and Pittsburgh, PA, and Baltimore, MD.

She also served the superior at St. Hugh Catechetical Center in Hughesville, PA; and moderator of the Marian Convent Guild, from 1981 to 1982.

From 1982 until the time of her death, Sister Maria Thomas served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She is survived by several cousins.

The funeral will be Friday, October 14 with Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Thursday afternoon or evening.

Archival Remembrance:

After teaching at several grade levels for a few years, Sister Maria Thomas became principal and served in this capacity at I.H.M. schools New York and Pennsylvania.  Her last teaching assignment was at St. Clare's School in Scranton.
