Sister M. St. Gabriel Cox, IHM
Sister M. St. Gabriel Cox, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Tuesday, August 15, 1995 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on April 19, 1906 in Amsbury, Pennsylvania, and given the name Hazel Mary. She was the daughter of the late Henry Ellsworth and Bernadette Hertzog Cox. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1922, made temporary profession of her vows on December 29, 1924, and final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.
Sister St. Gabriel served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ephrem in Brooklyn, NY; St. Mary John in Cresson, PA; Immaculate Conception in Lock Haven, PA; St. Matthew in Wilmington, DE; St. Patrick in Olyphan, PA; Sacred Heart in La Plata, MD; St. Rosalia in Pittsburgh, PA; All Saints in Masontown, PA; and South Scranton Catholic in Scranton, PA.
Sister also served as an instructor at St. Patrick's Catechetical Center in Milford, PA.
From 1980 until the time of her death, Sister Gabriel served as a prayer minister at both St. Peter of Alcantara Convent in Port Washington, NY, and at the Marian Convent.
She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in French/English from Marywood College.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Leroy, and three sisters, Helen Prague, Geraldine Trexler, and Sister M. Englebert, IHM.
She is survived by a sister, Sister Maria Bernadette, IHM of Scranton, PA; and a brother, Joseph "Ralph", Brooklyn, NY; and nieces and nephews.
Archival Remembrance:
With deep faith and unwavering trust, Sister St. Gabriel Cox bore a long illness that finally called her to God. During her more than 70 years of ministry, she served as a teacher. She is remembered for her gentle, pleasant disposition. Her patience through long years of ill health reflected the spirituality which took first priority in her life. Most of all, she is remembered as a loving sister by the Cox family and by her IHM family.
