Sister M. Gilbert Cawley, IHM

Sister M. Gilbert Cawley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, August 2, 1976 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on June 15, 1894 in Archbald, Pennsylvania, and was given the name Agnes Loretta.  She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Bridget Ferris Cawley.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 24, 1927, received the religious habit on December 29, 1927, and made profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.

Sister Gilbert served as a nurse at: St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA, from 1929 to 1930; St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, PA, from 1930 to 1953; Immaculata Hall at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1956 to 1967; and the IHM Congregation's Motherhouse in Scranton, PA, from 1967 to 1974. 

Sister served as the superior and nurse at St. Agnes Place in Elmhurst, PA, from 1953 to 1955, and St. Joseph Shelter and Day Nursery in Scranton, PA, from 1955 to 1956. 

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister Gilbert served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Martin Joseph, and Hubert Cyril, and three sisters, Mary E., Catherine M., and Beatrice C. 

She is survived by a brother, Thomas of Baldwin, NY, a sister, Blanche Schumacher of Scranton, PA, and several nieces and nephews, including Sister M. Beatrix Cawley, IHM, of Scranton, PA.

The funeral will be on Wednesday, August 4 at 9:30 am in the Marian Convent Chapel, Marywood, Scranton.  Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, PA.  Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon.

"Death Takes IHM Sister; Nun 50 Years

Sister M. Gilbert Cawley, a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order for half a century, died unexpectedly Monday at the Marian Convent, Marywood. 

A daughter of the late Thomas and Bridget Ferris Cawley, she was a native of Archbald. 

Sister M. Gilbert entered the congregation Sept. 24, 1927, and professed her vows Dec. 29, 1927. 

She had been a nurse in St. Joseph's Hospital, Carbondale, more than 20 years, and was a superior and nurse at St. Joseph's Shelter, and Day Nursery, Scranton.  She also had been a nurse at Marywood College and the IHM Motherhouse.

Surviving are a brother, Thomas Cawley, Baldwin, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Blanche Schumacher, Scranton, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted Wednesday from Marian Convent, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the convent chapel.  Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.  Viewing, today at the convent."
