Sister M. dePaul Dougherty, IHM

Sister M. dePaul Dougherty, IHM,  of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died Sunday, February 6, 1983 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on August 13, 1908 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Helen Gerrity Dougherty.  She entered the IHM Congregation on August 14, 1928, received the religious habit on April 1, 1929, and made profession of vows on April 14, 1931.

Sister dePaul served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Scranton, PA; and St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY.

Sister dePaul served as the Director of Nursing and as a nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, PA.  She also served as the Director of Nursing and a pharmacy assistant at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA.

She received her registered nursing degree from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Carbondale, PA.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ellen Dougherty and Sister Maria Helen, IHM.

She is survived by two brothers, Joseph of Scranton, PA, and Edward of Maspeth, NY, a sister, Mrs. Alice Fitzgerald of Maspeth, NY, and several nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be  on Tuesday, February 8 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.

Sister M. dePaul Doughtery, Sister, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Order, former director of nursing and nurse anesthetist at St. Joseph's Hospital, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital. 

Daughter of the late Edward and Helen Gerrity Dougherty, she was born on August 13, 1908 in Scranton, and was a member of Holy Cross Parish, entered the IHM Congregation on Aug. 14, 1928, received her religious habit April 1, 1929, and made profession of her vows April 14, 1931.

She taught at St. Ann's and St. Patrick's Schools, this city, and St. John's, Binghamton, and went into nursing at St. Joseph's.  In 1975 she was assigned to the staff of the Marian Convent, where she was director of nursing and pharmacy assistant.

Survived are two brothers, Joseph Doughtery, Scranton, and Edward, Maspeth, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Joseph Fitzgerald, Maspeth, and nieces and nephews.

A sister, Sister Maria Helen, IHM, died in August.

The funeral will be Tuesday with Mass at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel.  Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.  Friends may call at the convent this afternoon and evening."
