Sister M. Evangeline Conmy, IHM

Sister M. Evangeline Conmy, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, March 11, 1984 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

She was born on December 8, 1898 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Anthony and Jane Scanlon Conmy. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 29. 1917, received the religious habit on January 3, 1918, and made profession of vows on December 27, 1919.

During a long career, Sister Evangeline taught upper elementary and secondary classes at St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA, and at schools located on Pittsburgh, PA. She served as principal and teacher at Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA; St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA; St. Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Binghamton, NY; and at schools located in Baltimore, MD. She also served as supervisor of many of these convents, including at Sacred Heart Convent in Jermyn, PA.

From 1972 until the time of her death, Sister Evangeline served as a prayer minister.

She is preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Ann.

She is survived by two sisters, Margaret Conmy and Helen Mannion, both of Carbondale, PA, a brother, John, of Carbondale, PA, and two nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, March 15 with a Mass of Christian Burial in the Marian Convent Chapel at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon or evening.
