Sister M. Aloysia Schermanson, IHM

Sister M. Aloysia Schermanson, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, January 12, 1978 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on July 27, 1891 in Washington, DC, and given the name Sigrid. She was the daughter of the late Joel and Henrietta Kullberg Schermanson and was a member of the class of 1910 of the IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID.   She entered into the IHM Congregation on August 23, 1912, received the religious habit on August 2, 1913, and made profession of her vows on July 6, 1915.

Sister Aloysia taught music and primary grades at the following schools: St. Cecilia Acedmy in Scranton, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Basil Academy in Dushore, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Spokane, WA; St. Lawrence Academy in Portland, OR; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID; and at the IHM Academy in Coeur d'Alene, ID.  In addition to teaching the 5th and 6th grades at St. Lawrence Academy in Portland, OR, she was also the principal from 1934 to 1946. 

From 1971 until the time of her death, she served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Monsignor Eric and Joseph; and two sisters, Esther and Agnes.  

She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Clement, IHM, of Scranton, and Maria of Wallace, Idaho.

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA.
