Sister M. Ann McHale, IHM

Sister M. Ann McHale, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, December 12, 1993 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on June 4, 1909, in Scranton, PA, and given the name Eleanor. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Anna McHale McHale.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1927, made temporaty profession of her vows on December 28, 1927, and made final profession of her vows on December 27, 1929.

Sister Ann was a teacher at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Susquehanna, PA, from 1927 to 1928; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1928 to 1929; St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1929 to 1950; South Catholic High School in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1952; Pittston Central Catholic High School in Pittston, PA, from 1952 to 1953; St. Patrick High School in Scranton, PA, from 1953 to 1956; St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, PA, from 1956 to 1962; and St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY, from 1962 to 1969. She served as principal at St. Patrick High School in Olyphant, PA, from 1956 to 1962.

Sister also served as a guidance counselor at the following schools: St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY, from 1962 to 1969; St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1969 to 1978; St. Lawrence Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1978 to 1979; St. Alphonsus High School in New York, NY, from 1979 to 1980; and Cathedral High School in New York, NY, from 1980 to 1982.

From 1982 until the time of her death, Sister Ann served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

Sister Ann earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin/English and a Master of Arts degree in Latin, both from Duquense University.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas J., and two sisters, Rita Sheffield and Mary Bowes.

She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Dorothea McHale, IHM, nieces and nephews.

Archival Remembrance:

Sister Ann McHale is remembered as religious, a leader, an educator, and beloved sister of Sister Dorothea. She was prayerful, cheerful, loving and gracious to all. During her career as principal, she led hundred's of students to safety from a fire at St. John High School in Pittston. Lasting memories of her love of God and his people remain with those who knew her.
