Sister M. Austin Murdock, IHM

Sister M. Austin Murdock, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, September 29, 1997 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on October 1, 1911 in Taylor, Pennsylvania, and given the name Grace. She was the daughter of the late George and Mary Jane Mackin Murdock. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, made temporary profession of her vows on April 24, 1933, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1936.

Sister Austin served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1933 to 1935; St. Michael's School for Boys in Hoban Heights, PA, from 1935 to 1937; St. Mary of Mount Carmel Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1947 to 1950; St. Matthew Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1963 to 1967; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1969 to 1973; St. Mary Elementary School in Avoca, PA, from 1973 to 1978; Our Lady of Good Counsel Elementary School in Inwood, NY; St. Ephrem School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID; as well as at schools located in Altoona, PA, Coeur d'Alene, ID, and La Plata, MD.

Sister also served as a private music teacher at St. Paul Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1978 to 1987.

She served in prayer ministry in Staten Island, NY, and at the Marian Convent from 1990 to the time of her death.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin and English from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Joseph, and five sisters, Mary Cooper, Elizabeth McNamara, Catherine, Evelyn and Sarah.

She is survived by a niece, Mary Beth Skrocki of Howell, NJ, and other nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday, October 4 at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Friday after 2:00 p.m.
