Sister Catherine Joyce, IHM

Sister Catherine Joyce, IHM, (formerly Sister M. Rosaria) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, June 13, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on March 26, 1926 in Chinchilla, Pennsylva, and was the daughter of the late William P. and Mary C. Kelly Joyce. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1945, made temporary profession of her vows on May 8, 1948 and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1954.

Sister Catherine served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA, from 1949 to 1950; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1951; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1957 to 1959; St. Patrick School in Scranton, PA, from 1990 to 1993; St. Paul School in Scranton, PA, from 1993 to 1995; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA; St. Bernard Parochial School in Hastings, PA; St. Basil School in Dushore, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh, PA; Forest Hills and Manhasset, NY; Baltimore and LaPlata, MD.

Sister also served as a tutor at the Educational Enrichment Institute at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA, from 1989 to 1990, and receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton, from 1995 to 1998.

From 1998 until the time of her death, Sister Catherine served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Marywood College, and was a member of the National Catholic Educational Association.

She is preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Burnett and Loretta Jones, and four brothers, William, Francis, Jack and Lawrence.

She is survived by two sisters, Maureen (Mary Theresa) Kapp of Scranton, PA, and Betty Reap of Houston, TX, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday, June 17 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
