Sister M. Flora Long, IHM

Sister M. Flora Long, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, November 15, 1973 at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on September 8, 1916 in Patton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Ann Rita. She was the daughter of the late George and Helena Gauntner Long.  She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1936, received the religious habit on August 2, 1936, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1938.

Sister Flora served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Mary Elementary School in Upper Marlboro, MD, from 1938 to 1940 and 1952 to 1956; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1940 to 1948; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1948 to 1952; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA, from 1956 to 1959; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1958 to 1963; and Christ the King Elementary School in Dunmore, PA, from 1964 to 1969. 

From 1969 until the time of her death, Sister Flora served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary, Edna Florence, and Dorothy.

She is survived by three sisters, Gertrude Louise Ranish, Helen Leib, and Edith Pfohl, two brothers, Sgt. Joseph A. and Earl Joseph, nieces and nephews.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
