Sister Mary Francis Legnard, IHM

Sister Mary Francis Legnard, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Saturday, August 4, 1984 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

She was born on June 11, 1887 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Gilbert B. and Margaret Doyle Legnard. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1914, received the religious habit on August 3, 1914, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1916.

Sister Mary Francis served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Hollidaysburg, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Renovo, PA; St. Joseph Elementary School in Aliquippa, PA; St. Paul Elementary School in Edgewood, RI; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; as well as schools located in Altoona and Pittsburgh, PA.

From 1966 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Francis served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by three brothers, Frank D., Gilbert, and Robert W., and two sisters, Eleanor and Sister Maria Dolora, IHM.

She is survived by a brother, Judge James Legnard of Leguna Hills, California, and several nieces and nephews

The funeral will be Tuesday, August 7 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Monday afternoon or evening.
