Sister M. Pius LaRocque, IHM

Sister M. Pius LaRocque, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Friday, September 24, 2004, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on September 9, 1906 in Tupper Lake, NY, and given the name Theresa. She was the daughter of the late Ovilla and Rose Martin LaRocque. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 15, 1931, and her temporary profession of vows on May 1, 1934, and final profession of her vows on August 2, 1937.

Sister Pius served as an teacher at the following schools: Marywood Seminary in Scranton, PA, from 1933 to 1934; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1934 to 1945 and 1968 to 1971; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1945 to 1952; St. Bernard Elementary School in Hastings, PA, from 1956 to 1960; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA, from 1972 to 1975; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clark's Green, PA, from 1982 to 1986; St. Peter Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY; St. Thomas Elementary School in Providence, RI; as well as at schools located in Washington, NC; and Baltimore, MD.

Sister also served as instructor at St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA from 1963 to 1965.

From 1986 until the time of her death, Sister Pius served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/French from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Paul and Dr. Charles, and three sisters, Lucille, Charlotte, and Beatrice Baker.

She is survived by two sisters, Regina McGill and Mary Hayden, both of Tupper Lake, NY, a brother, Martin of Tupper Lake, NY, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. 

The funeral was Wednesday, September 29, at 10:00 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.  Friends may call on Tuesday afternoon after 2:00 pm at the Marian Convent.
