Sister M. Augustine Walton, IHM

Sister M. Augustine Walton, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on November 8, 1976 at the Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on November 28, 1896 in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and given the name Alice.   She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Lahey Walton.   She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1929, received the religious habit on April 21, 1930, and professed her vows on April 21, 1932.  Before entering the community, Alice taught in the Scranton Public Schools from 1917 to 1929.

Sister Augustine served as a teacher in the following schools: St. Ephrem in Brooklyn, NY, from 1932 to 1935; St. Paul in Providence, RI, from 1935 to 1939; St. Mary in Avoca, from 1939 to 1941; St. Patrick in Olyphant, from 1941 to 1942 and 1968 to 1969; Sacred Hearts in New York City, from 1942 to 1943 and 1946 to 1951; St. Rosalia in Pittsburgh, from 1943 to 1946; St. Dominic in Oyster Bay, NY, from 1951 to 1962; St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY, from 1962 to 1968; Pocono Central Catholic High School in Cresco, from 1969 to 1970; and St. Matthew in East Stroudsburg, from 1970 to 1971.  

From 1971 until the time of her death, she was a prayer minister at the Marian Convent in Scranton.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas.

She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Gonzaga, IHM; cousins, including our Sister M. Justa, IHM.

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
