Sister M. Georgina Wertz, IHM

Sister M. Georgina Wertz, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on December 18, 1968 at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Schenck Wertz, she was born on March 30, 1889 in Bedford, Pennsylvania; and given the name Magdalene. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 24, 1919, received the religious habit on August 2, 1919, and made profession of her vows on August 2, 1921.

Sister Georgina served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Mary in Avoca, from 1921 to 1922; St. Paul in Edgewood, RI, from 1922 to 1942; Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, NY, from 1952 to 1954; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Asbury Park, NJ, from 1954 to 1960; Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie, NY, from 1960 to 1961; and St. Charles in Sugar Notch, from 1961 to 1964.

She served as superior at Father Costello Nursery School in Williamsport, from 1942 to 1946; St. John's Home in Cresson, from 1946 to 1952; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Asbury Park, NJ, from 1954 to 1960.

From 1964 until the time of her death, Sister Georgina served in child care for resident children at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg.

She is preceded in death by two brothers Gervaise and Roosevelt William.

She is survived by three brothers, Ambrose Charles, Robert R, and Loyola Vincent; and three sisters, Edna, Grace Shaffer and Mother M. Beata, IHM; nieces and nephews. 

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Memorial contributions may be made to support the retired IHM Sisters c/o the IHM Sisters Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.
