Sister M. Denise Monahan, IHM

Sister M. Denise Monahan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, September 21, 1974 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on March 29, 1907 in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, and given the name Catherine Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late William and Mary Ellen Cunningham Monahan. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1931, received the religious habit on April 21, 1932, and made profession of her vows on April 24, 1934.

Sister Denise served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist School in Pittston, PA, in 1934; St. Paul School in Scranton, PA, from 1934 to 1935; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1935 to 1942; St. Ann School in Scranton, PA,  from 1942 to 1943; and St. Basil School in Dushore, PA, from 1943 to 1944. She also served as a catechetical instructor at St. Ignatius Church in Kingston, PA, from 1951 to 1952.

Sister served as the librarian at the following schools: St. Paul School in Scranton, PA,  from 1934 to 1935; Most Holy Rosary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1935 to 1942; and at Marywood College in Scranton, PA,  from 1944 to 1951 and 1952 to 1974.  

From 1974 until the time of her death, Sister Denise served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Mary, and a brother, Edward.

She is survived by a sister, Winifred, and three brothers, John, Thomas, and William.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
