Sister M. Uriel Hurst, IHM

Sister M. Uriel Hurst, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Sunday, May 6, 1973 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on February 17,1881 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Mary. She was the daughter of the late Thomas F. and Mary Ann Holland Hurst.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1906, received the religious habit on December 27, 1906, and made profession of her vows on April 13, 1909. 

In 1912, Sister Uriel was one of the first teachers at the new mission school of St. Patrick Parochial School in Spangler, Pennsylvania. She also served on the original faculty at St Mary-John School in Cresson, PA, when it opened in 1928.  She enjoyed her many years of teaching children in our mission schools. 

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas F., Jr. and Edward J., and a sister, Anna Regina McCaffrey.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Sister M. Dorothy McCaffrey, IHM.

Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
