Sister M. Modesta Walsh, IHM

Sister M. Modesta Walsh, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on October 15, 1967 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

Daughter of the late Michael J. and Mary Rafferty Walsh, she was born on November 25, 1899 in Scranton, Pennsylvania; and given the name Catherine. She entered the IHM Congregation on February 2, 1920, received the religious habit on August 6, 1920, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1922.

Sister Modesta served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John in Pittston, from 1921 to 1922; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Altoona, from 1922 to 1929.

In 1932, she received a nursing degree from Saint Mary's University in Rochester, MN.

Sister Modesta served as surgical supervisor and operating room supervisor at St. Joseph's Hospital in Carbondale, from 1932 to 1967.

She is preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Aloysius and Robert M.

She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Helen Bigelow of Landsdowne; Mrs. Clare Kearns of Scranton; Miss Grace of Newark, NJ; two brothers, Thomas of Scranton; Gerald of Moscow; nieces and nephews.

Interment will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
