Sister Mary Damian Howley, IHM
Sister Mary Damian Howley, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Monday, November 4, 1974 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on June 17, 1882 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and given the name Anna Marie. She was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Kelly Howley. She entered the IHM Congregation on March 25, 1905, received the religious habit on August 15, 1905, and made profession of her vows on July 16, 1907.
Sister Mary Damian served as a teacher at the following schools: Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Olyphant, PA; St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY; St. Cecilia Academy in Scranton, PA; St. Alphonsus Elementary School in New York City, NY; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA; St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary School in Archbald, PA; St. Mary Elementary School in Pittston, PA; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in Pittston, PA; All Saints in Masontown, PA; and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School in Altoona, PA.
Sister also served as a catechetical instructor at St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston, PA, and St. Ignatius Parish in Kingston, PA.
From 1965 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Damian served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.
She is preceded in death by a brother, Michael, and sisters, Loretta, Mary E., and Sister Margaret Mary, IHM.
She is surivived by two sisters, Margaret Kathleen MacDonald of Moscow, PA, and Elizabeth of Scranton, PA, a niece and a nephew.
Interment is at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, Pennsylvania.
