Sister Marian Flannery, IHM
Sister Marian Flannery, IHM, (formerly Sister M. Edgar) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, November 25, 1999 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
She was born on April 8, 1916 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late Kirwan and Adele Riffle Flannery. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1934, made temporary profession of her vows on May 3, 1937, and final profession of her vows on August 3, 1940.
Sister Marian served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Pittston, PA, in 1937; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA, from 1952 to 1953; St. Mary Elementary School in Patton, PA; St. Joseph School in Renovo, PA; as well as at schools located in Masontown and Pittsburgh, PA; and New York, NY.
Sister also served as an assistant professor of chemistry at Marywood College in Scranton, PA, from 1953 to 1972; science supervisor for diocesan schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre in NY, from 1972 to 1976; and a research assistant at Marywood College, from 1976 to 1981.
From 1993 until the time of her death, Sister Marian served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Marywood College, and a Master of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Ruth Coyne, Edith Gallagher, Louise Flannery and Rosemary Kenney, and a brother, Kirwan.
She is survived by a sister, Jane of Pittsburgh, PA, two brothers, Paul of Pittsburgh, PA, and Robert of California, and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday, November 30 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday between 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
