Sister M. Merici Gorman, IHM

Sister M. Merici Gorman, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Monday, November 20, 1978, at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, New York, after an illness.

She was born on February 11, 1913 in Brooklyn, NY, and given the name Helen Frances.  She was the daughter of the late Francis Vincent and Anna Veronica Maley Gorman.  She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1931, received the religious habit on April 21, 1932, and made pro­fession of her vows on August 2, 1934.

As a music and elementary school subjects teacher, Sister Merici taught at the following schools: St. Rosalia Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1934 to 1940;  St. Mary of the Mount Elementary School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1940 to 1942 and 1950 to 1952; St. Edward Elementary School in Twin Falls, ID, from 1942 to 1943; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1943 to 1950; Archbishop Neale Elementary School in La Plata, MD, from 1952 to 1953; Most Holy Rosary Elementary School in Syracuse, NY, from 1953 to 1957; St. Ambrose Elementary School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1957 to 1963; St.Rose Elementary School in Carbondale, PA, from 1963 to 1964; St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1964 to 1964; St. Agnes Elementary School in Baltimore, MD, from 1965 to 1970; and St. John the Baptist Elementary School in Unity, PA, from 1970 to 1971. From 1971 until the time of her death, she served as a teacher at St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY.

She is survived by a sister, Ann Connor of Hackensack, NJ, and a nephew.

The funeral will be Tuesday, November 21, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter of Alcantara Church in Port Washington, NY.  Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call on Monday evening at St. Peter of Alcantara Convent.
