Sister M. Jerome Walton, IHM
Sister M. Jerome Walton, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on August 11, 1921.
Daughter of the late Michael and Catherine Caveney Walton, she was born on September 8, 1855 in Hawley, Pennsylvania. She was one of four siblings to enter the IHM Congregation. She entered the IHM Congregation on July 15, 1881, received the religious habit on November 15, 1881, and made profession of her vows on September 5, 1883.
Sister Jerome enjoyed her many years of teaching children in our IHM mission schools, including Holy Rosary School in Scranton. She served as superior at Holy Rosary Convent in Scranton.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sister M. Gonzaga, IHM, and Sister M. Gonzaga, IHM.
She is survived by two sisters, Sister M. Bertrand, IHM; and Agnes McAloon; four brothers, Michael W.; Thomas A.; John J.; and James S.; nieces and nephews.
Interment will be at the Marywood College Cemetery, on the grounds of Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

"Sister M. Jerome Walton, the eldest of four sisters who consecrated themselves to the service of God in the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart, died August 11, 1921. Sister M. Jerome had just rounded out forty years of loyal service in the community. For many years she had been superior of Holy Rosary Convent, North Scranton. There, as in the other schools in which she labored, she endeared herself to the Sisters of her community as well as to the pupils in the school, by her wise direction and careful foresight that provided for every want. She was a most successful teacher, one whose earnestness and sincerity of character have left an indelible impress upon generations of men and women who count it a precious privilege to have had the advantage of her strong and virile guidance during the formative periods of their lives. Years after they had passed from under her control, they still looked to her for the kindly advice and encouragement that was never withheld. Sister M. Jerome as an educator and as a religious, proved herself a valiant woman in her generation. "
