Sister M. Rose Irma Spillane, IHM

Sister M. Rose Irma Spillane, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Friday, August 21, 1987, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.

Born on December 17, 1900 in Jermyn, Pennsylvania, she was daughter of the late Thomas and Ellen Corcoran Spillane. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 29, 1924, received the religious habit on December 29, 1924, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1926.

Sister Rose Irma served as a music teacher at schools in the following locations: Pittston, Williamsport, Stroudsburg, Bellefonte, and Montrose, Pennsylvania; as well as to Raleigh, North Carolina, and Dundalk, Maryland.

Sister served as principal of St. Patrick in Milford; Holy Name School in Forty Fort; and St. John in Bellefonte.

Her most recent assignment was to St. Matthew School in Wilmington, Delaware, where she taught intermediate grades.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Sister Jane de Chantal, SSJ; and three brothers, William, Thomas, and James.

She is survived by two sisters, Cecilia and Margaret Mary, both of Archbald, Pennsylvania; a brother, John of Baltimore, Maryland; nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania. Friends may call at the Marian Convent Sunday afternoon or evening.
