Sister M. Michael McArdle, IHM

Sister M. Michael McArdle, IHM, (formerly known as Sister M. St. Michael) of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Saturday, March 2, 2002 at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. 

She was born on July 2, 1917 in Masontown, Pennsylvania, and given the name Alice H.  She was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Ellen Ahearn McArdle. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1938, made her temporary profession of vows on May 8, 1941, and her final profession of vows on August 1, 1944.

Sister Michael served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Ann Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1941 to 1942; Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Green, PA, from 1956 to 1959; St. Paul Elementary School in Cranston, RI; St. Matthew Elementary School in Wilmington, DE; Holy Trinity Elementary School in Poughkeepsie, NY; and St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY.

Sister also served on the support staff of the Physical Therapy Department at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, from 1974 to 1981; and as an office assistant at Marian Community Hospital in Carbondale, PA, from 1981 to 1995. 

From 1995 until the time of her death, Sister Michael served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Master of Science degree in religious education, both from Marywood College.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Anna; Sr. Anna Theresa, IHM, Sr. Alverna, IHM, and Sr. Henrita, IHM, and three brothers, Joseph, Edward, and Reverend Henry, OSA.

She is survived by a sister, Cecilia McArdle Maher, Chicago, IL; a brother, Michael, Ford City, PA; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday after 2:00 p.m.
