Sister M. Rose Monica Welsh, IHM

Sister M. Rose Monica Welsh of the Congregation of Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died Tuesday morning, April 2, 1991, at the Marian Convent in Scranton, PA, after an illness.

Born on September 17, 1906 in Portage, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late  Peter W. and Honora Walsh Welsh. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 14, 1924, was received into the novitiate on December 29, 1924, and made profession of her vows on August 15, 1926.

Sister Rose Monica served as an elementary teacher specializing in music at the following: St. Leo Elementary School in Ashley, PA; Immaculate Conception Elementary School in West Pittston, PA; St. Peter Catechetical Center in Wellsboro, PA; St. John the Evangelist Elementary School in Bellefonte, PA; St. Patrick Elementary School in Spangler, PA; St. Mary in Manhasset, NY; as well as elementary schools located in Pittsburgh, PA.

Sister Rose Monica also served as a receptionist at the IHM Center in Scranton, PA.

From 1985 until the time of her death, she served in prayer ministry at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Francis, Clarence, William, John, Edward, and two infants; and three sisters, Margaret Fesko, Bertha Halleran, and Genevieve.

She is survived by a sister, Sister M. Genevieve Therese Welsh, IHM,  of Scranton, PA; nieces and nephews. 

The funeral will be Friday, April 5 with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent chapel. Interment will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call on Thursday afternoon after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.

Remembrance of Sister Rose Monica:

Sister Rose Monica was a beautiful, happy sister to know. She was always ready to help make community life better. She did much to help the less fortunate. Her love of God, her prayerfulness, were her greatest gifts to IHM.
