Sister Joan Marie MacDonald, IHM

Sister Joan Marie MacDonald, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation died Sunday, December 10, 1978 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an extended illness.

She was born on September 19, 1896 in Bronx, New York, and given the name Ann. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine Chrisholm McDonald. She entered the IHM Congregation on September 8, 1930, received the religious habit on April 14, 1931, and pronounced her vows on April 24, 1933.

Sister Joan Marie served as a teacher at the following schools: St. Patrick Elementary School in Oneida, NY; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Dominic Elementary School in Oyster Bay, NY; St. Joseph Elementary School in Danville, PA; Holy Rosary Elementary School in Scranton, PA; as well as at schools located in Forest Hilly and Manhasset, NY, and Baltimore, MD.

From 1959 until the time of her death, Sister Joan Marie served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John, and two sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth "Bessie" Stanley.

She is survived by a niece and several nephews, including the Reverend John McDonald, who is stationed in Texas.

The funeral will be Wednesday, December 13 with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in the Marian Convent Chapel. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. at the Marian Convent.
