Sister Mary Edelina Miller, IHM

Sister Mary Edelina Miller, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, died on Monday, July 11, 1988 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania, after an illness.  She was in the fifty-eighth year of her religious profession.

She was born on December 24, 1911 in Elk Lake, PA, and was given the name Beatrice Mary. She was the daughter of the late Edgar J. and Rachel Taylor Miller, and the step-daughter of Jennings Bryan Birtch. She entered the IHM Congregation on August 1, 1928, received the religious habit on April 1, 1929, and made profession of her vows on 1931.

Sister Mary Edelina served as a teacher at the following schools: Most Holy Rosary High School in Syracuse, NY, from 1931 to 1938 and 1969 to 1970; Holy Rosary High School in Scranton, PA, from 1938 to 1941; St. Rose High School in Carbondale, PA, from 1941 to 1942; St. John High School in Pittston, PA, from 1942 to 1945; St. Mary of the Mount High School in Pittsburgh, PA, from 1945 to 1946; St. Paul High School in Edgewood, RI, from 1946 to 1947 and 1952 to 1954; Immaculata High School in New York City, NY, from 1947 to 1950; St. Joseph High School in Renovo, PA, from 1950 to 1951; St. Joseph High School in Williamsport, PA, from 1951 to 1952; St. Agnes High School in Baltimore, MD, from 1954 to 1955; St. Mary High School in Manhasset, NY, from 1955 to 1957; Cathedral High School in Scranton, PA, from 1957 to 1958; St. Ambrose High School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1958 to 1959; St. Ephrem High School in Brooklyn, NY, from 1959 to 1963;  St. Paul High School in Cranston, RI, from 1970 to 1971; St. Ann High School in Scranton, PA, in 1971; and St. Ann High School in Bridgeport, CT, from 1971 to 1974.  

Sister also served in child care for resident children at the Catholic Child Care Center in Hollidaysburg, PA, from 1974 to 1975; and St. Joseph's Children's and Maternity Hospital in Scranton, PA, from 1975 to 1983.

From 1983 until the time of her death, Sister Mary Edelina served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent

She is survived by three sisters, Doris Grose of Kirkwood, NY, Marjorie Wilcox of Binghamton, NY, and Mabel Anna Carpenter of Susquehanna, PA, three brothers, James Walsh of Bethesda, MD, Jennings Birtch and Robert Birtch both of Hallstead, PA, nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday morning, July 14, with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent at 10:00 am, with internment to follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.  Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Wednesday afternoon or evening.
