Sister M. St. Helen Sullivan, IHM

Sister M. St. Helen Sullivan, IHM, of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary died on Thursday, December 24, 1998 at the Marian Convent in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

She was born on April 16, 1907 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, and was given the name Joanna Elizabeth. She was the daughter of the late Timothy and Bridget Mannion Sullivan.  She entered the IHM Congregation on March 4, 1923, made her temporary profession of vows on August 15, 1925, and made final profession of her vows on December 8, 1930.

Sister St. Helen served as a teacher at the following schools: St. John Elementary School in Pittston, PA, from 1925 to 1926; Nativity of Our Lord Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1933 to 1950; St. Paul Elementary School in Scranton, PA, from 1950 to 1951; Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Elementary School in Jermyn, PA, 1951 to 1954; Cathedral Elementary School in Scranton, PA,1954 to 1960; St. Joseph Elementary School in Williamsport, PA, from 1972 to 1973; Notre Dame Elementary School in East Stroudsburg, PA, from 1975 to 1982; St. Peter of Alcantara Elementary School in Port Washington, NY; St. Ephrem Elementary School in Brooklyn, NY; as well as at schools located in Pittsburgh PA; Manhasset, NY; and New Bern, NC.

Sister St. Helen served as an assistant principal at Bishop O'Reilly High School in Kingston, PA, from 1960 to 1963.

Sister also served as a parish minister in East Stroudsburg, from 1982 to 1994.

From 1994 until the time of her death, Sister St. Helen served as a prayer minister at the Marian Convent.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in social studies from Marywood College, and a Master of Arts degree in supervision from the University of Pennsylvania.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Sister M. Hilarian, IHM; and five brothers, John, Dan, Thomas, Timothy and Vincent.

She is survived by a sister, Winifred Bell of Hatboro, PA; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Tuesday, December 29 at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at the Marian Convent, followed by interment at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Friends may call at the Marian Convent on Monday between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
