IHM Initiates Service Project to Benefit Mother Seton Academy

Sister Maureen Schrimpe chaired the 2014 NACUFS (National Association of College & University Food Service) national conference in Baltimore, MD, in July.

There were more than 1200 college and university attendees as well as vendors representing a wide variety of companies serving the university campuses. From July 9-12 the attendees had the opportunity to select from a wide variety of educational sessions, enjoyed the local fare of Maryland crab as well as other local favorites.

The closing event was held at Ravens Stadium where the attendees could tour the stadium. The 2014 committee chose to do a service project at the conference. Our committee decided to take
Mother Seton Academy, co-sponsored by the IHM Congregation, as their project. The committee asked all the universities to bring logoed backpacks with a letter inside encouraging them to go to college. It was hoped that 150 backpacks would be donated but more than 235 were received. The committee asked the industry members to donate the school supplies and/or gift cards for students to purchase their own school supplies. Many school supplies as well as $9400 in checks, cash and
gift cards were donated. When presenting them, Sister Margaret (Peggy) Juskelis, SSND, president of MSA, was absolutely shocked by the outpouring of generosity from the NACUFS conference members. Additionally, the members donated cases of tissues for the classrooms and cases of coffee and creamers for the faculty room. Sister Maureen commented that the service project was very successful and it has now been established that the national conferences each year will choose a school in need to support.

Sister Maureen Schrimpe received a plaque in recognition for her service on the NACUFS Board of
Directors and as National Conference Chair.
