Members of Leadership Team Travel to Chicago

On October 15, 2018  after canceled flights, delays, and the availability of only four plane seats from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, Terri, Ellen, Nancy and Mary traveled to Chicago to meet with our Sisters of St. Casimir.

The Sisters of St. Casmir greeted our new team with days full of kindness, hospitality and love.

Our time together was an opportunity for the new IHM leadership team to get to know the SSC leadership team and for them to get to know us. We attended the annual investment review meeting and auditors meeting on Monday followed by a memorable tour of the beautiful legacy space dedicated to Mother Maria Kaupas and the SSC congregation. A homemade Italian dinner at Nativity convent, a local SSC mission, was a fine way to end a busy day full of travel and meetings.

The following day held a visit to Franciscan Village, a beautiful, picturesque Catholic senior living community in Lemont, Illinois, which now serves the aging needs of the Sisters of St. Casmir. The sisters and staff welcomed us as we celebrated the morning Eucharist together.

As the morning progressed, we shared coffee and treats, toured the various levels of care and were introduced to retired SSC nurses, hospital administrators and teachers. At noon the sisters residing at Franciscan Village and both the IHM and SSC leadership teams shared a delicious lunch in a private dining room served by the Franciscan Village staff. The dinner held time for the sharing of stories with many sisters describing their connections to IHM Sisters and to Marywood University where many of them received their degrees.

The afternoon hours provided time to visit with sisters residing in the Franciscan Convent, a separate facility on the grounds of Franciscan Village, where sisters are able to live independently. The convent also serves the needs of the retired Franciscan Sisters of Chicago.

Late afternoon held one final meeting between the two leadership teams with the Sisters of St. Casmir sharing with the team the following written statements from their chapter: “We formally accept the SSC/IHM Covenant document and Plan Agreement. Therefore, we direct our leadership team to continue conversations with the IHM leadership that will result in practical steps toward deepening our covenant relationship.”

Our flight home was as perfect as our days with the Sisters of St. Casmir and we are grateful to each of their sisters for making our days together a time filled with cherished memories and new relationships.
