Advent and Christmas are seasons of promise, light, truth, and hope. In our world we are aware of the darkness all about—so much violence, injustice, and suffering. Our hearts yearn for freedom, for consolation, and for peace. We hold on to the promise that Emmanuel, God, is with us.
The liturgical readings of the Advent and Christmas seasons are rich with God’s promises. They touch our longings and lead us to encounter God’s coming, again and again, into our lives.
We invite you to pray with us throughout Advent and Christmas. Each of our eleven writers has contributed four reflections for this book. The pages that follow reflect their prayer, and their writings offer diverse and creative ways in which we can enter more deeply into this sacred time. Their suggestions for action can provide us with ways to reach out to others who are in need—in our families, communities, church, and world.
During this holy season, may we, rooted in God and in the Gospel, stand together and courageously commit ourselves to enter in the joys, hopes, griefs, and anxieties of the people of this world. As we reach out to others, may we be always aware that our God is with us.
